Azama is a tiny village at the end of a long dirt road, elevation 11,000 feet, in the northern Andes in Ecuador. It’s inhabitants, numbering around 3,000, are an indigenous population of noble Incan Quichan heritage who struggle with poverty and extreme hardship. The Azama Project was created, under the umbrella of People Helping People (PHP), to alleviate suffering, offer hope, and develop and staff medical, dental and educational facilities.
Since the Project’s inception in 2004, it has completed a community building in Azama that houses a school and a medical and dental clinic, offering health care services, a medical education program, and infant care classes. In 2006, responding to demand, a large addition with more classrooms was completed. In 2008, PHP built another school in the community of Cachicullia, and a new nursery and grammar school in the mountain village of LaBanda is sponsored by PHP as well. The schools offer all students a nutritional, high-protein lunch. PHP has recently invested in a bus that services students in neighboring communities and is soon to offer an adult education program to the communities as well.
In keeping with PHP’s sustainable philosophy, the villagers were the primary source of paid labor in all building efforts, offering members of the community not only an income but a sense of pride in creating these critical facilities as well.
